6 Career Insights for 2015

6 Career Insights for 20156 Career Insights for 2015Each fall, the Career Thought Leaders Consortium sponsors the Global Careers Brainstorming Day, when about a dozen groups of career professionals gather to discuss whats new and whats nextin the world of career management, counseling, coaching and job hunting. The same structured sessions take place simultaneously in locations throughout the U.S., abroad and online. At the Boston gathering, there were about a dozen academic-based and government-funded career center professionals, independent career counselors, rsumwriters and coaches.A white paper that coalescesthe insights from all the groups will be published in the first quarter of 2015. Until then, here are six main areas of insight drawn from the Boston session1. LinkedIn is essential, but it has limits. The group was unanimous that LinkedIn is key to almost all job searches. It allows a job seeker to present a personalized snapshot, in longer form than in arsum. Nonetheless, it remains intimidating to many, and some industries (such as financial services) are limited in their ability to share information. Your social media profile has to be not only about what you do, but how you do it. Stories can back up your claims, says Lynn Levy, a career consultant at REA Partners in Transition. Still, many people who are currently working, but seeking to make a move, are unnecessarily afraid to make necessary changes and updates to their LinkedIn profiles. They fear that their boss or co-workers will note the changes and begin to suspect disloyalty.Plus, Lily Chryssis, who supports MBA students at Babson College, observes that many of her international student clients from China and Latin America encounter significant language barriers. AsJane McHale, a leading personal brand coach, puts itLinkedIn needs a translation service. Several group members think that down the line, there will be a backlash against LinkedIns predominance in the job market and something else will emerge to provide competition.2. Its increasingly important to post work samples online in bestellung to be found and evaluated. If you are a creative, such as a web designer, graphic artist, architect, photographer or performer, it pays to have your own website and use it to show portfolios of your work.Likewise, if you are a computer coder, its important to use sites like Github to post examples of your work.3. Employers are seeking relationships with students years ahead of hiring them. Many employers are drawing students into their orbit years before theyre ready to hire them, whether through their employment portals on their websites, LinkedIn relationships or internship programs. Rather than relying on a single interview, employers look at a persons growth over years. They identify potential top performers early on and build relationships with those students, so that they will become the employer of choice when the student is ready to enter into the employment pool.4. S upply and demand still rule. When unemployment was high and quality job seekers were plentiful, employers had the luxury of defining very narrow targets that a candidate had to hit in order to be hired. Now that the economy is recovering and the rates of unemployment have decreased, companies need to loosen their requirements and become more reasonable. As this trend continues, employers will be more likely to seriously consider career changers with the appropriate skills than they have been in recent years.5. Companies and employees are readjusting their mutual expectations. In the past, a person might expect that the vast majority of his (back then it was only his) career would be at a single company, and he would look forward to a fully funded retirement.Smart employers and employees recognize that this is no longer the case and adapt to it from both sides. A feeling of self-fulfillment in a meaningful job has a much greater priority for younger generations. They typically dont e xpect to remain at a company more than three to five years. Smart companies are interested in where their employees are going to end up and brand themselves that way. They will provide ever more opportunities for employees to experiment at different roles within the company and to gain experience that will enable them to move forward with their longer-term career objectives. While this is not yet the norm for most companies, the group of experts in Boston senses that a trend toward this corporate attitude will emerge in coming years.6. The global employment landscape is changing. Louise Kursmark, one of the CTL leaders and organizers ofGlobal CareersBrainstorming Day suggests that we need to change our vocabulary when talking about work. She argues that we shouldnt even use the term permanent job and instead talk about a full-time job..If you are in the job-search mode today, here are a few key takeawaysMake sure your LinkedIn profile is always up to date, and use it to tell your own unique story in an interesting and compelling fashion.Understand that the nature of work is changing, and the mutual obligations of employers and employees are no longer what they used to be.If you are interested in changing careers, make sure you acquire the skills and experience that will be relevant to what you want to do next. Opportunities to jump from one role to another will likely increase as the economy continues to improve.Forget about trying to get a job or work in a company long-term. Understand that yourrsuma decade from now will likely include multiple career moves. Be prepared to make those moves in a purposeful, thoughtful progression. Consider Temp-to-Perm in Your Job Search

Consider Temp-to-Perm in Your Job SearchConsider Temp-to-Perm in Your Job Search4dream job is listed as freelance or even as a temp-to-perm position? Dont reject a job simply because its not full-time. Heres why.In todays ever-changing job market, many companies are taking full-time positions and offering them first as freelance jobs. Why? Sometimes there is turnover for a particular position, and instead of having to generate paperwork for each new employee, its simply easier to have a staffer start as a freelancer.Savvy companies also know that its far less complicated to let a freelancer go than a salaried employee. Hiring a person as a temp gives an employer freedom to determine if its really a fit between the staffer and the company without any future complications should the relationship need to be terminated. So if you come across a job that is ideal for you, that challenges you mentally, and that lets you work from your home office, you should definitely consider it even if it s not full-time. After all, many companies hire from within, and theres a great chance that your temp job could become a permanent position over time- if you want it to be.Readers, have you taken on a temp job in the hopes that it would become permanent? Let us know in the comments section below

Report Working anywhere but your desk makes you more effective

Report Working anywhere but your desk makes you more effective Report Working anywhere but your desk makes you more effective Open-work areas, coworking spaces, and and the ability to hop all over the office throughout the day were some of the hot topics of architecture, design, and consulting firm Gensler’s 2019 U.S. Workplace Survey,  based on the opinions of 6,000 office workers.A greater portion of people today report working in a “balanced workplace” (44%) meaning a workplace that emphasizes both individual and collaborative work.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Nobody seems to want an open office â€" but no one seems to want a totally closed one either. Seventy-seven percent of workers prefer a working environment that falls between the two, with different types of spaces they can go to throughout the day serve different working purposes.Workers spend less time working alone today (45%) than they did in 2013 (54%), the last time the survey was performed. They spend more time collaborati ng in person today (30%) than in 2013 (17%).Workers also report having greater levels of choice and autonomy at work as to where they work â€" 45% of U.S. workers say they have a choice in where they work within their office.Inter-office mobilityWhat’s so great about working away from your desk?    According to Gensler, people who work away from their desks within the office frequently are more effective, perform better, and have a better workplace experience.“It’s about providing both that variety and empowerment, which is what choice is really about,” said Janet Pogue, principal and Workplace Leader at Gensler. “And as we were able to compare those that had choice and those that didn’t, we saw that 71% of people with choice in where to work in the office actually reported a great workplace experience. While only less than half than [41%] without choice reported a great experience.”Cowork to winA different type of positive mobility surface with the use of coworking sp aces, specifically, large companies providing their employees the option to use a coworking space part of their week.Working from a coworking space heightens the work experience if employees do it about one day a week, but if they do it any more than that, then benefits start to dwindle.“We measured a sharp decline if people spent more than a day and a half a week [at a coworking space rather than their office], which really proves that the office is still the most preferred location for performance,” said Pogue. “And so to us, that tells us that using co-work as a supplement but not a replacement for a great work experience.”Pogue was also surprised to find that workers were using their time at the coworking spaces “more for networking and social, not individual focused work.”In other words, some mobility is good, but not too much. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Get Back in the Game After Maternity Leave

How to Get Back in the Game After Maternity Leave How to Get Back in the Game After Maternity Leave There are two keys to the success of working motherhood. One is how well you can plan your life personally and professionally. Two, if you can maintain enough personal energy to do everything that you plan. If you follow this plan when you return to work you’ll won’t worry so much, you’ll feel organized, and competent. Keep Your Work Calendar Updated Because your child is constantly changing, your pediatrician wants to see them often. Most will request to see them once per month for the first six months, then every three months, up until their second year of life. When you return to work check your work calendar and then schedule these visits as far out as your doctor’s calendar can go. Then update your work calendar, your spouse’s calendar, and peoples calendar in your support system who you’d trust to take your child to their appointment. Plan for worst and hope for the best! If you’re breastfeeding, put your pumping sessions in your calendar. Label these times as “meetings” as theres no reason to use pumping session. This way you are doing your best to avoid scheduling conflicts. If you are in charge of daycare pickup, mark your calendar as busy after 5:00 PM or whatever time you need to leave. This will help avoid getting out of business meetings or conference calls. If there are exceptions to your personal boundary, make them known but otherwise, part of working motherhood is setting boundaries and sticking to them. Plan How to Handle Your Sick Baby If your child is in daycare it is inevitable that they will get sick. Plan how you’ll handle things when daycare calls you to pick up your sick child.   Who will pick up your baby, you, your spouse, or someone in your support system? If it’s you, make a plan with your manager how you’ll handle this. If your manager seems difficult to work with now that you’re a working mom use the A-E-I-O-U model to open up this discussion. The conversation may sound like this: “I understand we’re really busy with our  project and its all hands in right now. Now that I’m back I’m looking forward to contributing again. My baby is in daycare and I think she’ll get sick sometimes so I wanted to discuss how to handle this before it happens. I will let you know as soon as possible if need to leave to care for him/her. If I do leave I can log in from home as soon as I get him/her down for a nap and can also make up time at night. I’ll also commit to sending you an email after summing up what I worked on. This way I’m contributing and also taking care of my child. What do you think of this plan?” When you offer a plan you’re making less work for you manager and controlling the situation. Reassess Your Workload Your maternity leave gives you a chance to think about your career. When you return you may have a fresh perspective on where you’re headed or where you’re at in your career. This is a great time to reassess your workload. Are there any projects you wish you were working on?  Why are you interested in them? Are there some projects you no longer want to be a part of? Perhaps they don’t fall under your job description so you could delegate them to focus more on your performance goals. Schedule a Meeting with Your Manager When you schedule this meeting set the agenda. You’d like to discuss a plan to manage your work when you need to care for your sick child. You’d like to discuss your workload where you can share your thoughts after you’ve reassessed it. Perhaps someone took over your accounts or projects and you wish to get up to speed on what you missed during the last business quarter. Plus, you want to connect on a personal level if that’s the kind of relationship you hopefully have. How have they been, their family, and how has their workload changed over the past three months. Then share what you thought about while you were on leave. Where do you see your career headed or what new perspectives did you gain while on leave? Do you want to take a class to strengthen your strengths or improve your weaknesses? Then research classes beforehand and present them to your manager. Make Time to Get Reacquainted with Your Co-Workers You have gone through some major changes but so have your co-workers. By the time you come back it’s public knowledge you gave birth so keep your baby talk brief. Get super curious about everyone around you. What have they been up to for the past three months? What have they worked on? What have they accomplished? Most people love to talk about their own life so take this opportunity to get people to open up to you. Since they haven’t seen you in a while it’ll be easy for them to think of something to share with you. Listening intensely is the best way to get to speed on things. Plan Your Mornings to Avoid Running Late Getting you and your baby ready in the morning is one of the biggest challenges a working mom faces. It doesn’t help your stress level if some people in the office are a stickler for promptness. Just because you’re a working mom now do not expect people will give you slack. If you have a problem with tardiness before you became a working mom you need a good morning exit strategy. This plan will need to be altered often because as your baby grows their needs change. When you introduce solid foods you’ll need to account for longer feeding times. The occasional diaper explosion or projectile vomit can also delay your departure so get prepared. Instead of letting mornings stress you out treat your exit like a game. You have to get through three tests which are getting dressed, eating breakfast, and then packing and walking out the door. Yes, pack the night before, but for things you need to grab in the morning put neon pink post-its on them. This color will catch your eye and remind you to grab it. This trick will last for four to six months so load up on post-it notes from your local Dollar Tree store. Leave a box of diaper wipes and disinfectant wipes on the kitchen table or kitchen counter. This will handle quick spills on tables and dirty faces in seconds. Figure Out How to Take Good Care of Yourself Self-care is vital to a working mom’s success. If you give all of your energy away with no plan to replenish it you’ll be in trouble. Before you get into hot water, make a self-care plan to follow. Include things like taking walks during your work day so you get away from your desk. Take a bath on Sunday nights to start your work week off on the right foot. Start a journal and write about what you’re grateful for. Follow a bedtime routine, just like your kids to, to help calm your mind and body.

How to Write the Best Cover Letter for Resume

How to Write the Best Cover Letter for Resume How to Write the Best Cover Letter for Resume How to Write the Best Cover Letter for Resume When it comes to the job search process, there are two commonly asked questions: Do I really need a cover letter and do I need one for all of my applications. The simple answer is yes. The cover letter is a chance for you to not only optimize your job search but make a connection with the employer. The cover letter is an excellent opportunity to really show what you are capable of and is an excellent tool to set yourself apart from other candidates. This article is going to help provide a do it yourself strategy for writing the perfect cover letter. Before you begin your cover letter start with ensuring that you have all the information you need by consulting the below checklist: Your contact information which includes your full name, email, phone number, address and, if applicable your Skype contact and LinkedIn link The readers contact info, if you do not know the person’s name using “Dear Hiring Manager,” is suitable The job posting Your tailored resume or CV The official name of the position and the company name A strong understanding of the company and the work they do Ensure that the letter is no more than one page Choose a format Ensure that your contact information is at the top and bottom of the cover letter when completed More importantly, see below for a list of cover letter don’ts: Avoid retelling your resume Never use a font style that is different from the professional resume, they should match Avoid making a cover letter that is too wordy or more than one page Once you have all of your information gathered, the next step you want to take is to plan out your method of projecting the info in a suitable manner. You want to do it so that it clearly explains to the employer who you are and what you can do for them. Choosing a format Believe it or not, there are two formats when writing a cover letter. The first format is simply three to four paragraphs and the second consists of paragraphs and bullet points. When choosing a cover letter format there is no right or wrong it is mostly a matter of personal preference. The paragraphs go as follows: First Paragraph: Tells the employer what position you are applying for and mentions the company name. The paragraph also should tell why you applied for this job and mention a fact about the company in relation to you. Second Paragraph: This paragraph is the most important, as it gives the employer insight about your qualifications as it relates to the perspective job. This section explains your education, abilities, accomplishments and any work you have done that is specifically related to the job posting. This section is also a good area to directly address the must haves that the employer is looking for, for example, the ability to work specific shifts, certain academic certifications, etc. Third Paragraph: This paragraph is meant to reaffirm your information or to discuss your soft skills such as multitasking, communication or anything related. It is always a good idea to mention something that you really like about the employer in this section as well. When drafting your cover letter and if you choose the bullet point format, take note that this would be the section that takes over the second paragraph. It is advisable to include 6 to 7 bullet points. This format is suitable when you have several topics to discuss as the setup is meant to directly relay information. How to select which information to include in the Cover Letter This is often confusing for cover letter writers as the information you choose will set the tone for the entire cover letter and initial communication with the employer. Begin by selecting the most important information and qualifications that the employer is looking for. This information is geared towards the qualifications and job responsibilities. When you read through the job posting you want to take note of what information has the closest relation to you and your background. In the event that there is must have skills, which you have not yet used in the workplace but have a strong knowledge base of you will want to take note of how you will explain this information in your cover letter. Once you have gathered the relevant information you should take the time to arrange it in a proper order. See below for an example, of what order you could arrange your information in: Number of years, which includes work type and industries Must know information or skills which are mandatory (could be 1 to 3 points) Education and certification information Your knowledgebase information as it is related to the job Information about actual examples from past experiences (1 or 2 points) This layout of information can be used for either cover letter format, and can be potentially broken up into two paragraphs if you choose the paragraph format cover letter. What really counts when you are writing a cover letter is that you are crafting a letter that speaks to the employer on a personal level. The contact between the candidate and employer is most effective when a personal connection is made. This can be done in a few ways: discussing your values in relation to the company, addressing the reader directly by name, giving real life examples of how you have helped past employers and ensuring that all of your points constantly come back to the job posting. The thing to remember is that employers are looking for someone who can solve a problem for them, and it is your job to explain how you can do that for them. Once the middle points of the cover letter are completed and you have given the employer a strong sense of who you are and what you can do for them, you will want to use the last paragraph to reaffirm your enthusiasm for the position, your soft skills and any other information you feel the employer might need to know, followed by restating your contact information.

Tips to Get Your IT Resume to the Right Person

Tips to Get Your IT Resume to the Right Person Tips to Get Your IT Resume to the Right Person Whether you’re a web developer, help desk manager or other technology pro, using the right keywords in your IT resume helps ensure it gets past automated gatekeepers and into a hiring manager’s hands. A good friend of mine once asked me to take a look at her resume. She was ready to embark on a new job search and looking for some objective input from someone in the IT staffing industry. I was glad she did â€" with a strong technology background spanning several years.   I expected an IT resume peppered with strategic technology keywords that I knew hiring managers would be searching for. Instead, the document was somewhat vague â€" well written without question â€" but not as targeted as it needed to be. Fortunately, my friend was open to some constructive feedback and took my advice on resume keywords. The importance of IT resume keywords How essential are keywords in an IT resume? The short answer is very important. Quite simply, using the correct keywords helps the right hiring managers find your resume, so it’s critical for technology job seekers to include them. With so many companies using applicant tracking software to scan resumes, these IT resume keywords will help you clear the first hurdle and get past the automated gatekeeper. Check out these four software engineer resume mistakes to avoid. Focus on key competencies in your IT resume The first step is to think about the kind of job you are targeting. If you have an actual job description for a specific opportunity â€" web developer, for example â€" read it carefully and highlight the words that you see in the job description.  If you don’t have a job description, try pulling up some current IT job postings with similar job titles online and see what words are being used in those IT job descriptions.   Using web developer as an example, you will likely find terms such as mobile applications, user interface, .NET and HTML come up multiple times. These are the words you should include in your resume, assuming you have that experience. Software and technology competencies are particularly important and worth repeating in different sections of your IT resume. Think like an IT hiring manager Also keep in mind that hiring managers typically use nouns when running searches. For example, they might use “management experience” rather than “experience managing.” Of course, when it comes to IT resume keywords, it’s everything in moderation. You don’t want to get carried away by over-using them â€" especially if the keywords you're including are misleading or are unrepresentative of your experience and qualifications.  While using the right keywords might get you past the tracking software, a hiring manager will not be impressed by an IT resume that’s been overstuffed to the point that it no longer reads clearly, logically or honestly. Keep your IT resume focused on your qualifications, specialized skills and accomplishments, using keywords strategically throughout the document. These easy guidelines will help land your resume at the top of the pile and get your foot in the door for the all-important interview. This post has been updated to reflect more current information.

10 Tips for Writing a Professional Resume

10 Tips for Writing a Professional Resume 10 Tips for Writing a Professional Resume Last on many peoples lists of things to do is writing a resume. But a powerful resume is what gets you to the next stage â€" the interview. Writing a resume that will land you an interview can be a daunting task, but if you follow these 10 rules, you will succeed. 1. Readability Is Key When you write your resume, put yourself in the reviewers shoes and imagine having to read many resumes that are dense and difficult. Not a favorite task for most hiring authorities. The first rule is making your resume easy to read. Keep your paragraphs short â€" no more than three lines apiece. Longer paragraphs can be off-putting. Brevity is your best bet. Some hiring authorities will take no more than six seconds to review your resume before deciding whether to read the rest. I suggest you bold important information so it stands out during the six-second scan. 2. Target Your Resume to a Particular Job This is a concept that makes many job seekers cringe, but it is essential to embrace. No two jobs are alike. Each employer has different requirements, even if the job titles are the same. Its important that you understand the requirements of the job and address them on your resume. Doing this will make reading your resume a pleasure, because youve shown that you understand the employers needs and potential problems. Remember, its about the employer, not you. 3. Beat the Applicant Tracking System Human resources, recruiters, and hiring managers receive  a lot of resumes â€" hundreds for each  position â€" so they need a way to cut down the number of resumes they have to read. Enter the Applicant Tracking System (ATS), the answer to their problem. Your resume must contain the skills, phrases, experience, and other keywords to make it through the ATS. How do you determine the required keywords? A great program for this is Jobscan. It analyzes your resume against the job description and tells you which keywords your resume has and doesnt have. 4. Include Your LinkedIn Profile URL in Your Contact Information Any job seeker who is in the game has a LinkedIn profile. If you have a great LinkedIn profile to match your professional resume, be sure to direct prospective employers to it by including  your LinkedIn URL in your contact information. My only warning is that you dont copy and paste your resume to your LinkedIn profile and leave it at that. Create a profile that is more creative and personal, one that shows off your personality while also expressing your value. Related: Building Your Personal Brand 5. Dont Forget a Branding Title This is something I see on the best of resumes. Its what sets the best candidates apart from the rest. It tells an employer who you are â€" e.g., your occupation and areas of strength. For example: Marketing Specialist Content Generation | Trade Shows | Social Media | Cost Control | Vendor Relations 6. Write a Performance Profile That Delivers a Punch This is a section on a resume that sometimes gets overlooked in a reviewers rush to get to the employment section. However, if you throw something in that immediately expresses your value â€" such as a bolded accomplishment statement â€" your performance profile will not be overlooked. Example: Operations manager who consistently increases companies revenue in excess of 60 percent annually 7. Dont Forget Your Core Competencies Consider the person who is reading tons of resumes and how theyre looking for the key skills for the position. Now consider how easy youll make their job if you have a section that lays out those skills and any additional skills that could serve as  tie-breakers. 8. Most Important Is a Strong Experience Section A strong experience section is the main course of the reviewers dining experience. Its what resume reviewers focus their attention on the most; its your chance to sell yourself and close the deal. All that was mentioned above is fruitless unless you tie it together. A professional resumes experience section must include: - A summary in paragraph format for each position comprising overall duties. For example, Hired to improve manufacturing production and communications among departments. Managed a team of 15 software and hardware engineers that grew to perform in a collaborative manner. - Key accomplishments in bullet format that are quantified using numbers,  dollars, or percentages. A professional resume will sell you with accomplishments, whereas an average resume will comprise mainly of duties. Wrong: Responsible for directing engineers to deliver data storage software. Right: Directed 15 engineers to deliver â€" on time â€" data storage software, boosting sales 55 percent in a down economy. 9. Length Is Important; Keep It Short The length of your experience section must be relevant to employers needs today, not 25-30 years ago. Age discrimination can also be a concern, so showing 10-15 years is a safe bet. Remember: Its your goal to get to the interview, and then you can sell yourself with your years of progressive experience. 10. Education Anchors Your Resume This section usually anchors your resume â€" unless its a strict requirement, in which case it would follow the performance  profile. Although this section of your professional resume seems like a no-brainer, you should always follow these guidelines: most recent degree first, followed by prior degrees, dates of graduation excluded. For example: Master of Arts, Communications with a Concentration in Marketing, University of Boston, Boston, MA. Bachelor of Arts, English. Bentley University, Waltham, MA. â€" Now that you  understand how to write a powerful resume, its time to get to work. My final bit of advice is write your own resume. If you do hire a professional to help you, work very closely with them. There is a lot of work ahead of you, but you can do it.
