5 Rules for the Executive Job Search - Workology

5 Rules for the Executive Job Search - Workology 5 Rules for the Executive Job Search The job search can be especially tough for executive level candidates.   Salary requirements are high and their are a limited number of open positions available which are often go unadvertised.   Earlier this year, the Ladders conducted a survey which listed the top 3  biggest mistakes  made by highly compensated and qualified job seekers.   And to round out the list to five, Ive added two more based. 5 Rules for the Executive Job Search Desperation.  I had a VP level candidate at a previous employer call more than 15 times in one day without leaving a message.   The candidate was among the two finalists and had just interviewed two days prior.   Because my cell phone was forwarded from my office phone, I was able to see that he had called 15 times without leaving a message.   He did however, leave a message the next day but left a bad taste in mine and the hiring managers mouth.   Someone at this level must be able to maintain composure and professionalism at all times. Poorly Prepared Marketing Materials.  Out of date resumes, cover letters, and online profiles are one of the most common mistakes of job seekers regardless of their education or salary level.   Most CEOs have spent hours in meetings talking with their management teams and marketing departments agonizing over PR, marketing, and advertising strategies with careful planning and consideration.   Use an Resume Writer or Executive Coach to provide you personal branding and marketing support. Lack of Interview Preparation.  Interviews are your chance to sell your skills, qualifications, and what you bring to the table.   Bring in a team of industry experts, professional level contacts, and others to help you get the support and preparation you need and deserve. Dont rely on only your brilliant personality or savy business sense to help you land the job.   Most C-Suite candidates have a stellar supporting cast just like the assistant coaches and trainers on Division 1 level college football and basketball teams.   Roy Williams or Joe Paterno would not be where he is today with out a supporting cast.   Why should your job search be any different? While I certainly agree with the Ladders survey, I believe they left out two key mistakes made by executives while searching for a new position.   These two bullets are often overlooked opportunities for job seekers.   And because executive tenure is often much higher than the average job seeker (which is 18 months), executive job seekers do not practice or consider these important skills in the context of the job search as frequently. Nerves.  Since most job seekers at the executive level are not in the job market very often, they are often very uncomfortable in situations they are not familiar with.   A Director level candidate had a stellar resume.   My Director and myself were eager to meet him after conducting several pre-screen phone interviews.   Once he arrived to the interview, however, it was clear he was very uncomfortable, flustered, and rambled uncontrollablely.   Although extremely impressive prior to meeting him, he was not confident and comfortable enough and was no longer considered for the job. Your interview starts from the first phone call.  I have had a number of high level candidates who were either rude to the receptionist that was scheduling the interview by phone or upon arriving to the interview and checking in with the receptionist.   Administrative assistants and secretaries who work closely with their executive teams are called upon more often than not to provide insight and thoughts on candidates.   It pays to always be humble and confident yet gracious when in the job hunt no matter what position level or job title. What are your thoughts?   And should the executive job search be that much different from the average jobseeker.

What is Work-Life Balance Anyway - Kathy Caprino

What is Work-Life Balance Anyway Last night, when my 11-year-old child implored me to play soccer with him (his preferred indoor past-time), and I said no for the tenth time (since I was hotly composing my 100th work email for the afternoon), I halted abruptly. I lifted my fingers off the console, turned around in my deskchair, investigated his eyes, and gave him a major, long hug. I chose to leave working, and play indoor soccer instead. (My little girl joined as well, and we had a total impact, giggling insanely the whole time). At the beginning of today, I started reconsidering work-life balance. What is it, truly? How would we (would it be a good idea for us to) characterize it? I accept every one of us needs to characterize it precisely the manner in which we need to, however for me, work-life balance implies these things: I have power over what I state yes and no to (in work and at home) I like my decisions (I'm not abrogated with blame, disarray, and hatred over what I'm doing) I've stopped by working â€" accomplishing more than should be expected, more than is sound and more than proper (in both my family life and at work) I'm aware of what persuades me to go about as I do, and I'm satisfied with those inspirations I've defeated my dependence on work I'm clear about how my conduct as an expert lady would affect (and give a good example to) my better half, kids, and others I'm available to criticism from others about my conduct, and I adjust suitably On the off chance that I can say the above explanations routinely, I feel I'm finding some kind of harmony between my own life, my work life, and the personalities of both. What's more, when I can say the above proclamations with guarantee, it likewise implies that my life is unfurling such that makes space for the accompanying positive results: I'm managing head-on with my duties, in an enabled way I'm doing what's important to keep me and my family secure and developing I'm seeing that what I do matters I'm adapting admirably to my pressure I'm open about when I need assistance (and clear when I don't need any more assistance) I feel in charge My family is progressing admirably, and my own life is fulfilling My work is working out in a good way, and my vocation is fulfilling No little thing, work-life balance, right? I'd love to get notification from you… what accomplishes work-life balance intend to you? How would you know when you have it, and when you don't? Do you accept work-life balance is feasible, these days, and during confused occasions such as our own?

Cover Letter Bloopers Lessons Learned

Cover Letter Bloopers Lessons Learned ShareShare2A friend recently shared a funny post about some strange statements found in cover letters, and I thought Id pass them along in the spirit of learning. I am sicking and entry-level position. This unwell sentence reminds us that the automated spelling and grammar checkers in Microsoft Word and in your email program are often ridiculously inadequate. Use them, but also proofread very carefully, or better yet hire a professional. Skilled proofreaders are available for as little as $2.50 per page. Try a site like elance.com or contact me and Ill refer you to someone. Im submitting my resume to spite my lack of C++ and HTML experience. See the entry above re: spelling checkers, but theres another issue here. If you dont have all of the desired qualifications, should you apply anyway? It depends. Do you have a connection in the company who can put in a word for you? And are the skills youre lacking non-essential, just nice-to-have? If your answer to one or both of these questions is yes, it may be worth applying. I realize that my total lack of appropriate experience may concern those considering me for employment. Are you really totally lacking? Or do you have experience gained from school projects, volunteering, or internships? Emphasize what you do have, and dont be apologetic. However, if your resume doesnt very closely fit the jobs youre applying to online even though you know you can handle the job its time to refocus your job search time on networking. Your real, three-dimensional self may be more convincing than your resume. If your experience isnt even close to the job requirements, you may need to beef up your skills or consider adjusting your career path. Ill need $30K to start, full medical, three weeks vacation, stock options and ideally a European sedan. Never bring up salary or benefits until there is a definite job offer on the table! Naming a too-low figure could damage your bargaining position, and a too-high one could knock you out of the running. And skip the European sedan. I think a Honda might be a better investment mine never needs repairs! I need just enough money to have pizza every night. Was this in response to the instruction: Please include your salary requirements in your cover letter? The problem with that request is that a cover letter is no place to be talking salary already. Name too low a figure, and your negotiating position is ruined possibly along with the employers opinion of your abilities. Too high, and they decide they cant afford you. If your qualifications are outstanding and/or you have a personal connection, you could simply ignore the request. Or try stating something like this. I understand your concern about salary requirements. It is difficult to be specific before we have discussed the responsibilities and opportunities involved. If your needs and my abilities are a fit, I believe well be able to agree on a fair compensation package. On the other hand, if the posting says Applications without salary requirements will not be considered, you might use the verbiage in the paragraph above, adding something like this: My research on salaries for this type of position shows a range of about $80-100K for a person of my experience and skills. (Notice that you are not committing to accepting $80K, nor are you necessarily saying you wont ask for more!) Is pizza really enough for a happy life? Maybe, if its a veggie pizza from Blondies in Berkeley, California. Mmmm. If this resume doesnt blow your hat off, then please return it in the enclosed envelope. Thats safe enough. If the explosives didnt go off already, theyre unlikely to detonate on the way back either. Forget the presents More than half of us cant wait to open emails on Christmas Day

Forget the presents More than half of us cant wait to open emails on Christmas Day by Tom Bunkham Christmas could be the perfect time for clued-up jobseekers.Whether its on our smartphones, tablets or laptops, the pressure to keep up to date with whats happening in our own little worlds can be almost overwhelming. From what our friends are saying on Facebook, to breaking international news on Twitter, we have the power to connect like never before. And this ease of staying in the loop means we could be increasingly giving in to the temptation to check our work emails when were not supposed to be working. According to our latest poll of UK workers, 56 per cent of us expect to be looking at our work email on Christmas Day this year. Also, emphasising a real can-do attitude to Christmas toil, more than three-quarters (77 per cent) of us you would be prepared to work on Christmas Day if the outcome was a new job.Overall, a third of us will be at our workplaces during the Christmas period, with a further 10 per cent working from home.Christmas can be a great chanc e to get ahead of the pack before the January rush, by focusing on your job search and brushing up your CV and interview skills. Most of us would probably rather switch off and enjoy some well-earned rest at Christmas, but our survey highlights the extent to which technology enables us and even obliges us to keep in touch with our work. Here we look at the issue of working and looking for work at Christmas, and the role that technology can play. The specialist recruiterRecruiter, CJ Walker, who runsboutiquedigital communications consultancy Firehead, says shes not surprised that jobseekers are staying switched on and checking emails at Christmas, as they gear up for New Years Syndrome. The New Year is a natural break, the holidays give candidates time off to prepare their CVs and search their options. Everyone is looking forward, she added.Of course, as were all doing such a large amount of digital communication, it makes sense to give some serious thought to how we may be coming acro ss online. CJ says she Googles every single person she is interested in interviewing and then cuts her shortlist down from this. The always-on nature of digital communications provides a lot of information for recruiters to use: good, bad, and ugly, she says.Although it is very possible to represent yourself inaccurately online, gaps of poor judgment say a lot. Recruiters can build a rounded picture of a person if they research so much available information online. What you see and what you dont says a lot.The active jobseekerFrom a jobseekers perspective, adopting a proactive approach over the festive period could be a potential gamechanger. One person who will be keeping her eyes open this Christmas is recent graduate, Harriet McWilliams. Shes looking for a job in marketing, but also worked her way through university with a job in a restaurant and can sympathise with the 77 per cent of us who said we would work on Christmas Day if it secured a new job.Whatever industry youre int erested in, Harriet advises jobseekers to take the opportunity to get a foot in the door at Christmas, gaining experience and making yourself indispensable at a potentially busy time.Potentially, if you can impress them enough maybe they will extend your contract, she adds.Through her job search so far and through experience of internships along the way Harriet has devised her own strategy. And its all about making the most of your contacts.Harriet explains: Gaining a large network, consisting of a variety of people, is important, as even if some of these people may not be specifically relevant to you, they may have knowledge or contacts that are.The headhunterCorporate Handyman,Martin Ellis, offers some advice and encouragement for anyone who is looking for a new job. He recommends striking while the irons hot whether youre one of the 33 per cent of you who will be in work, the 10 per cent who will be putting in the hours from home, or part of the majority who should be sitting back and relaxing.Martin says that it doesnt matter where potential jobseekers are at any one moment; they are more active than theyve ever been and are able to pounce at anything that moves even when they are, in theory, relaxing at home.I can remember a time when the Christmas holiday was just that a holiday but the internet doesnt sleep, and people were never more attached to their technology than today, he adds. The technology specialists According to recruitment software company Arithon, the technology aspect can make the hiring process at Christmas that bit more manageable.Writing on the companys blog, Manuela suggests using Cloud software to stay in touch accessing with any device, wherever you are in the world and keeping your eyes open on social channels for the latest positions. So whether you expect to be putting in the proverbial shift this Christmas, or sitting back with the turkey and sherry, remember that you could be just a few clicks away from your new job provi ded you are ready to move before that New Year rush
